Running Head: THE IMPACTS OF INTERVENTIONS ON HHC 1 Haley Iovino and Sabrina Ferreira May 1, 2018 Fairchild Wheeler Campus Ms. Keli Veillette The Impacts of Interventions on Hand Hygiene Compliance Abstract  Running Head: THE IMPACTS OF INTERVENTIONS ON HHC 2 The purpose of this experiment was to analyze the effects of direct and indirect hand hygiene instruction on high school students during the flu season. By monitoring five separate and distinct groups on absenteeism and hand hygiene compliance (HHC), researchers found that the class that received both direct and indirect instructions about hand hygiene had lower absences and higher HHC. Students that only received direct education had lower absences compared to the controlled group while the class that was exposed to indirect interventions had an increase in school absences and a decrease in HHC. Overall, groups that were taught the importance of proper hand hygiene were shown to have higher HHC compared to other groups and a reduction in absenteeism. Future experiments should investigate how the use of sensory cues impact HHC in an educational setting. Problem Statement  Running Head: THE IMPACTS OF INTERVENTIONS ON HHC 3 The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2012) states that in an annual influenza epidemic, 22 million school days are missed by students between the ages of 5 to 14. Schools inherently foster the transmission of infections and disease due to its shared spaces and close proximity. The sharing of supplies and equipment increases the spread of bacteria creating the epidemic all school systems suffer from during the flu season (Anonymous, 2016.) In the average American classroom, a simple sneeze can distribute viruses up to a 200-foot radius (Dizikes, 2014.) This spread of infection and disease results in school absences that can lead to a lack of essential education. The deficiency of public hand health campaigns in the American educational system contributes to the majority of these school absences. (Johnson Foundation, 2016.) Students in educational settings are at an even higher risk of contracting flu-like symptoms between November and April. Poor hand hygiene is the cause of the spread of diseases and infections in public environments. Introduction Proper hand hygiene is crucial in reducing the number of disease-causing microorganisms and potential illnesses. Cleaning one's hands accordingly can prevent the spread of viruses, including those that are resistant to antibiotics and nearly impossible to treat. For example, cold viruses can spread by touching contaminated people or objects. Infected hands can then spread to the mouth, ears, and eyes and cause a person to develop flu-like symptoms. Likewise, Salmonella, a bacterium that causes severe upset stomach, can cause an individual to  become ill if he or she touches surfaces where raw foods, particularly meats, have been sitting (Microbe World, 2014). Therefore, practicing good hygiene is the most important measure to avoid the transferral of infections and potential illnesses. Handwashing with soap removes  Running Head: THE IMPACTS OF INTERVENTIONS ON HHC 4  bacteria and viruses from hands which help prevent diseases by reducing the number of harmful microorganisms that can then get into the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth.
